China: European and American Democracies Face the Challenge
February 24 – 25, 2005
Czech Senate Building
The progress of civilized society increasing tends to show that the protection of human rights within a nation’s borders cannot coexist with indifference to respect for human rights abroad. How best to promote human rights on a global scale is a problem that demands attention. The Civic Institute organized this conference to examine a particularly thorny instance of this problem - the case of the economic and military superpower, China. Senator Josef Jarab, Chairman of the Czech Senate Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security, welcomed the international experts participating in the conference. From China came Li Xiaorong, who spoke on Human Rights: Challenges and Opportunities in China. Other speeches included Joe Studwell’s lecture, Perception and Reality in China's Development, Perry Link asking What kind of a China is rising?, and Daniel Blumenthal’s analysis of the military aspect of the question: Taiwan, Regional Security, and China’s Modernizing Military. The Civic Institute was also honoured by the presence of special guests, H.E. Alexandr Vondra and H. E. Jana Hybaskova.
